In my last blog post I suggested that shopping local thrift stores was a good way to furnish your home on a budget. There are a few ideas for safety and cleanliness that you need to take when buying a thrift store upholstered furniture. Do all this before you cover it with a new slipcover.
I shared about a chair I bought for $10. Here is what we did before putting the cover on the chairs. We left the chair outside in our storage room. We sprayed it thoroughly in every direction and crevice with bug spray. Many have heard of the problems with bed bugs and in the south where I live there are roaches. After spraying, we left the chair in the storage room for several days to be sure there was nothing living in it.
Then we took the steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment and gave the chair a good cleaning. I didn't want any bug spray residue left on it. When it was dry, we vacuumed it really good.
After all this was completed, we put our new wing chair slipcover on the chair. I used a product called tucking grips to help keep the slipcover in place. That eliminated the need for constant re-adjusting. We brought it in the house and it made a great chair for my husband who doesn't like to recline.
Just a few ideas to prevent an infestation of bugs in your home.
